What is kratom?

It is a native tree from Southeast Asia which includes Thailand, Malaysia, Borneo, Indonesia, and many others. It has a botanical name, Mitragyna speciosa. It is related to the common coffee tree which is known as Rubiaceae as they come from a similar family. Individuals from South East Asia have been using pure kratom leaves as a herbal medicine from ancient times. They use it in folk medicine mainly as a stimulating drug that is at a lower dosage, as a sedative at a higher dose, pain reliever, recreational drug, a diarrhea drug, as well as in treating opiate addiction. Most individuals have reported the use of kratom is effective in the treatment of arthritis, fibromyalgia, and restless legs disorders.
